Germany is a land of festivals regardless of the time of year. In August, there are several large fairs and festivals to take your pick from. Visit the Munich Summerfest, Tuebingden Summerfest, the Hamburg Dom, the Hamburg Alster Fair, the Hanover Maschsee Festival, the Berlin Gauklerfest, the Berlin-American Fair, the Berlin Oberbaum Brücke Open Air Art Show or the Rhine in Flames. 1. The Hamburg Alster Fair and International Fireworks Competition-31 Aug - 3 Sep

During the Alster Fair, Hamburg hosts four nights of competitive fireworks displays from countries around the world. The Alster, in the city center, is surrounded by booths, stages, beer gardens, and tents offering up every type of food and drink imaginable.

The beautiful setting, the great music and entertainment, and 4 nights of spectacular fireworks make this a prime weekend to be in Hamburg.

2. The Annual Berlin Gauklerfest- 4 Aug -13 Aug

The Gauklerfest is held each year in the middle of historic Berlin, in one of the most scenic areas of the city between Alexanderplatz and the Brandenburg Gate. Offering up a wide selection of street performers, acts, gourmet food and drink as well as plenty of arts and crafts and antiques, this is a favorite destination for Berlin visitors and residents the first week or so in August.

3. The Munich Summerfest -3 Aug - 21 Aug

The Summer Fest brings the Oktoberfest spirit to Munich's Olympic Park at the height of summer. Rides, food booths, beer gardens and various competitions including the boatman's tournament where boatmen try to capsize each other are all great fun.

4. The Annual Berlin German-American Fair - 28 July - 20 Aug

The Truman Plaza in Berlin's Dahlem district is transformed into a mix of German and American cultures every year as Berlin focuses on one state to host. There is plenty of entertainment, drinks and great food. This year the focus is on New Mexico - burritos and sauerkraut anyone?

Free to attend, takes place in the Dahlem District of Berlin for one month.

5. The Tuebingen Summer Festival-28 July - 13 Aug

The medieval town of Tuebingen on the Neckar River hosts a summer festival replete with street performers, food and drink stalls, rides, and entertainment. You can stroll the cobbled streets of Tuebingen, feast on German street fare and sample the hundreds of wurst offerings at the delicatessen market. On Aug 13, there is a brilliant fireworks display over the Necktar.

The festival is free to attend and meanders through the streets of Tuebingen.

6. The Hanover Maschsee Festival - 26 July - 13 Aug

The Hanover Maschsee Festival is one of the larger summer festivals in Northern Germany and offers concerts and performing arts catering to every taste. The festival opens and closes with splendid fireworks displays on the shores of Maschsee. Boats ferry festival goers from one stage to the other and there is plenty of food, beer, wine and arts and crafts to choose from.
The festival is free to attend and encompasses much of the Hanover area around the Maschsee.

7. The Hamburg Dom -28 July - 27 Aug

Roller coasts, ferris wheels, themed areas, arts and crafts booths and plenty of beer and food make this huge fair a favorite with over 2.8 million visitors each month. It is loud, crowded, noisy and fun especially if you are a lover of carnivals. Firework displays from the Hamburg Dom can be seen from all of Hamburg every Friday the Dom is open.

8. Berlin Oberbaum Brücke Open Air Art Show-6 Aug - 3 Sep

For the month of August, the Oberbaum bridge in Berlin is transformed into an open-air art gallery featuring over 100 artists from around the world.
