Great Events in Germany - Festivals and Special Events You Won't Want To Miss

By Michele Hartley, About.com

In Germany, every month brings something new, new events, new festivals, cultural activities, and great German culture. There are hundreds of special events in Germany and whether you are thinking of Oktoberfest or visiting castles or nude beaches, you are sure to enjoy your time in Germany.

Germany is full of surprises, from festivals where the whole family can enjoy the event to nightclubs which offer every form of entertainment. Planning your vacation in Germany may be a little easier if you know what is going on, what each month has to offer, as you plan your German tour, you might want to consider the events that hold the most interest for you.

Compiling a calendar of all German events would be difficult as there are thousands, but some of the most popular events are listed here. There are many free events, many events that you can enjoy just by wandering through the towns and cities that host special events like the Rhine in Flames or music festivals that are free. You can stay at a cheap hotel, where the shower douses the whole bathroom or at a luxury hotel, your experiences in Germany are not dependent on where you stay but where you are and the things you do. I have stayed in hostels, in campgrounds and in five star hotels - ultimately, wandering through a Christmas Market or spending a day at Oktoberfest far outweigh the hotel experiences. You can enjoy free events and free festivals, or visit some of the elite festivals like the Bayreuth Festival that require reservations years in advance.

Germany offers something for everyone, from pop and rock fans to classical music fans, from hikers, cyclists, and nudists to cultural afficionados, from the German Alps to the coasts of Germany. German dining offers everything from basic German food to continental specialties and if you love beers, there is no better place to be. German wines are appreciated the world over and I have to say, I have never stayed in a German hotel that was dirty and I have stayed in a lot of German hotels. Germans are clean and their food is great, no matter what time of year. Of course, you can visit in early summer/late spring for asparagus (Spargel) or fall for Gruenkohl, at Christmas time you won't want to miss the goose.

In general, German weather is mild, there is a lot of rain but you can live through the rain and even in winter, when it is snowing and quite cold, you can enjoy the Christmas markets. Germany offers events and activities year-round and no matter when you decide to visit Germany, you are sure to enjoy it, particularly if you know what events to attend.
