Learn About German Wines - German Wine Tips and Resources

A Simple, Fast Guide to German Wine and Wine Resources on the Web

From About.com

German wines often get the short end of the stick with California, Italy and France leading the list of favorite wine destinations. German wines, though offer a rich variety and high quality and the German wine country is beautiful. Wine tasting in Germany can be great fun and is offered not only at wineries but at wine cellars that represent the wineries located in wine villages and towns across Germany.

Almost every month of the year there is a wine festival in Germany, some of the best can be found on our Germany Calendar of Events . I particularly like the Mosel wine festivals (there are hundreds) and the Stuttgart wine festival.

Planning a vacation in one of the German wine regions is a great vacation option because not only can you taste fine wines and travel the wine country, but every region has various historic and natural sights to see including castles and medievel villages. With 13 wine regions spread across the southern half of Germany from east to west, you can pick not only the types of wine you would like, but the region you would like to see.

If you are a serious wine enthusiast or just want to learn more about German wines, the German Wine Institute offers massive amounts of information about German wine and events on the Deustchewein Web site. Another excellent resource for learning about German wines, German wine labels, vintages, and tasting notes in the German Wine Estates Web site which offers a particularly good explanation of German wine labels and as well as having a German wine club you can join to take advantage of special offers and have your own German wine tasting at home.

I don't profess to be a wine connisuer and having grown up in the days when Blue Nun was one of the cheapest wines you could get, I had a scewed impression of German wines until I truly started tasting wines in Germany. There are thousands to choose from, many elegant and complex and certainly some of the best wines I have had. Red wine enthusiasts will find less in Germany, but you will be hard pressed to find a richer selection of fine white wines anywhere. Having lived in the wine country of California, I had fallen into the red wine trap, under the mistaken belief that red wines were the most sophisticated, white wines were for wine wimps and pink wines for total novices (that one, by the way is belied by French Roses). If you are a red wine fan, make sure you try some of the Pinot Noirs (Spätburgunders) from Baden or wander through the town of Rudesheim and taste the variety of reds they offer. Reisling and Mueller-Thurgau lead the pack in terms of Germany's grape varietals and with so many to choose from, you might want to keep a wine journal, which is a great way to remember your favorites.

A final short note, when toasting with wine in Germany, you say "Zum Wohl!" - meaning "good health". So to all of you wine enthusiasts - Zum Wohl!
